De La Hoya Ready For Rematch with Mayweather?By BRANDON FINLEY There's no doubt about it. Oscar De La Hoya is ready for a rematch with the best boxer on the planet, Floyd Mayweather Jr. The question is, will Mayweather deem this fight worthy of his
If Saturday's tune up fight with Steve "2 pound" Forbes was any indication, De La Hoya might still have a way to go. De La Hoya was suppose to attract a lot of attention with this fight, but in order to do that he needed to look spectacular. Did that really happen without a knock down in the fight? Given that Forbes has never been knocked out in his career aside, De La Hoya really needed to put him on his butt. How are you going to attract that attention when you can't lay out a guy fighting up two weight classes? Sure, the fight's going to happen, but how are they going to build it when De La Hoya loses almost as much as he wins in this decade? Oscar wants to end his career back on top, but he's fallen so far. He has a career ending stretch of fights envisioned in his mind that started with a victory over Forbes, would continue in September with a victory over Mayweather in the much anticipated rematch, and then end with a fight against undefeated Miguel Cotto in December. However, maybe Oscar should spend less time promoting his Golden Boy productions, and moving fights in order to attract hype. Maybe, he should spend time getting ready for what will be boxing's biggest fight since the turn of the millennium. Mayweather is this generations' Muhammad Ali in a fading sport. De La Hoya plays the role of the slugging Joe Frazier. Come September we will see if De La Hoya can win the rematch, and send the fighters into part three of a trilogy. |
