Georgia Tech takes Wolfpack, 10-9, to open ACC Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Georgia Tech scored two runs in the top of the ninth on three consecutive North Carolina State errors to beat the Wolfpack, 10-9, Wednesday in the opening game of the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Under the two-bracket, round-robin format, the fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets (39-17) will face top-seeded Miami at 5:00 p.m. Thursday. The No. 4 Wolfpack (37-19) will play No. 8 Clemson in the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.

Hurricanes blow over Clemson, 7-1

Mark Sobolewski doubled home two runs in the first inning to give starting pitcher Chris Hernandez all the run support he would need as top-seeded Miami beat Clemson, 7-1 in the second game of this year’s ACC tourney. Miami is now 3-6 in ACC Championship play since making its first appearance in 2005. The Hurricanes are 3-4 over the last three years of Championship competition.

The Hurricanes (44-8) will face fifth-seeded Georgia Tech in a Division A round-robin game at 5:00 p.m. Thursday. Clemson (30-26-1), seeded eighth in the tournament, will play No. 4 North Carolina State at 8:00 p.m.

FSU hitters rack up home runs in 8-3 win over Wake Forest

Home runs by Buster Posey and Dennis Guinn in the seventh inning propelled No. 2 seed Florida State to an 8-3 victory over seventh-seeded Wake Forest. FSU starter Matt Fairel (10-2) struck out eight and gave up only four hits in seven innings. After Wake's Allan Dystra hit his 15th home run of the season with a man on in the sixth to give the Deacons (24-30) a 3-1 lead, Fairel retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

FSU will play sixth-seeded Virginia Friday at 5:00 p.m. Friday in a Division B round-robin game. Wake Forest meets third-seeded North Carolina at 8:00 p.m.

North Carolina falls in extra innings, 8-7

John Barr scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th inning to give Virginia the go-ahead run.
Seventh-seeded Virginia edged out an 8-7 victory over number three seed North Carolina after 11 innings Wednesday making this the fourth extra inning affair between the two in ACC Championship history. Virginia will face FSU at 5:00 p.m. Friday.

The team with the best record in each division meets Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the league championship title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
