Hundreds coming to Macclenny for softball tourneys

MACCLENNY, FL - Baker County Little League will be hosting teams from all over North Florida this summer, as players from age nine to sixteen come to town for sanctioned District Eleven softball tournaments. Coming to Minger Field in Macclenny, for the tourneys which will begin on June 28 are teams from all over Jacksonville, Saint Augustine, Fernandina, Callahan and Yulee.

League officials have been hard at work getting the twin softball fields into tip top shape for the onslaught of players and their supporters. Funding for some improvements has come through the generous support of the City Council of Macclenny and the Baker County Board of Commissioners.

With teams competing in numerous age divisions from minor (10 year olds) to seniors (14-15-16 year olds), more than 1,500 people are expected to visit the county during the two week tournament run.

The local organization expanded their program to offer girls softball for the first time this year and more than 200 hundred local young ladies were added to the ranks of thousands that have participated in the official Little League program over the past four decades.

New Girls Division Vice President David Crummey and Little League President Donald Combs are eagerly awaiting the release of brackets for the tournaments, so they will know exactly when the Baker girls will hit the diamond in their quest for Baker County’s first girl’s district title.

While the girls will be playing at home in their first season under the Little League banner, the Baker County boys teams will be hitting the road looking to add to their lengthy resume of district and sectional titles.

Rosters for the boys and girls team will be announced on June 15 and North Florida News Daily will be posting them that day.
