Bronson reminds about the dangers of wildfire during Wildfire Awareness Week
     Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles Bronson today announced that April 6th -12th is Wildfire Awareness Week. The second week of April has been designated as Wildfire Awareness Week in recognition of Florida’s devastating 1998 wildfire season, when more than half a million acres burned and 337 homes and other structures were damaged or destroyed by wildfires statewide.

Local softball player injured
     On Monday evening, a 15-year-old softball player was injured while participating in a senior division game at the Minger Field Complex on Macclenny. A member of the Baker County Senior Softball League Rebellettes team, the player collided with another team member while attempting to make a play on a batted ball.

Out-of-control car rams church
     Mt. Zion New Congressional Methodist Church was damaged after a vehicle plowed into the church just before midnight on Sunday, April 6.

8-Ball winners
     Already well known for their community involvement, the Macclenny Moose Lodge membership is building a reputation around the state for their prowess on the pool table. This past weekend in Fort Walton Beach, a four member team representing the local lodge took the top spot in the Florida Bermuda Regional Moose Association Men’s 8-Ball Pool Tournament.

     Local students were not the only ones cruising to the Atlantic coast this week. Alachua County Sheriff's deputies also headed to the beach as part of Operation Spring Break.

     Bradford County Sheriff Bob Milner has announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the Florida House of Representatives District 12 seat in 2008.

SonFest
     Thirty-two teens and adults from Souls Harbor Church of God in Glen Saint Mary gathered on Friday for SonFest, the annual Florida edition of WinterFest. The gathering, sponsored by the church's headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee, was billed as the premier event preparing youth for spreading the Gospel and developing leadership.

On the road for Freedom
     Like me, many of you might have thought that the Ron Paul campaign for president had been reborn and made a stop in Macclenny last night (April 2nd) at the local Super Wal-Mart parking lot. Turns out it wasn't an official visit from Ron Paul at all, but a Ms. Teddy Lancaster, Ron Paul supporter, traveler, and nationwide endurance horse racing extraordinaire.

Florida's minority students rank top of the nation in 2007 writing results
The performance of Florida
     Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith today announced that Florida’s Hispanic students rank second in the nation, and African-American students fourth, in the number of students scoring Proficient and above on the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Grade Eight Writing assessment.
