From The Sideline
Talk about tradition going right down the drain. That's exactly what happened during the Final Four this year as perhaps the two most dominant programs in NCAA basketball history were handily defeated by Kansas and Memphis.
Kansas does have a storied tradition itself, but when compared to the former two teams it fails in comparison. Memphis, well, they haven't done anything since the early seventies. However, they will meet for the National Championship at nine this evening.
John Calipari has been around the coaching block for a long time now, and his newly invented "Dribble-Drive Offense" could propel Memphis to a title, the first in Calipari's coaching career. Is it the offense or the players though?
Calipari may have never seen a team this talented in his time at UMass, but now he has two legit NBA talents on one team. Chris Douglas Roberts and freshman sensation Derrick Rose will probably both move on to the NBA next season, but more importantly they could be champions after tonight.
Kansas has coach Bill Self ready to hoist his first national championship trophy as well. Self and the Jayhawks laid an absolute thumping to the North Carolina Tarheels and former coach Roy Williams.
They've been severely over looked for the entire season, but that's because they don't possess one key player. Though Brandon Rush will probably take his game to the next level, the team doesn't possess a superstar.
What they do well is coexist as a team, and that's how they clubbed North Carolina. It's going to be the team versus the Superstars in the National Championship game, and Kansas has proven they can beat the stars. Now, it's time for them to prove they can lift a championship trophy.
