Carjacking suspect crashes after high speed chase
Release Date APRIL 10, 2008 - The Clay County Sheriff's Office
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded this morning to a call involving an elderly woman
who was the victim of a carjacking in the Wal Mart parking lot in the 800 block of Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park. 75-year-old Orange Park resident Thelma Ziel was grabbed by the suspect, dragged out of the driver’s seat and thrown onto the ground. When Mrs. Ziel attempted to grab her car door she was dragged along the pavement for a short distance. A quick-thinking bystander, Ms. Bonnie Modling, called 9-1-1 to report the incident while also attending to the victim. Modling also attempted to prevent the carjacker from leaving with the victim’s car, to no avail. Modling’s description of the suspect and the victim’s car went out to patrol deputies over the radio within seconds who were then able to locate the car in traffic on Blanding Boulevard and attempt a traffic stop. Meanwhile, the victim was taken by ambulance to Orange Park Medical Center where she was treated for a dislocated shoulder and multiple abrasions. Mrs. Ziel is now at home recovering from her injuries.
The suspect refused to stop and a 40-mile-long pursuit of this dangerous suspect began. The suspect, driving the victim’s 2004 Honda Pilot, topped speeds of 100 miles per hour south on Blanding Boulevard (SR 21) into Keystone Heights. He drove through the CVS parking lot at SR 21 & SR 100 and continued west on SR 100 into Bradford County. Bradford County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Starke Police Department officers were involved at that point. The suspect drove north on SR 301 out of Starke, able to evade four attempts to disable the vehicle’s tires through the use of stop-sticks. A Bradford County deputy was able to use a shot gun to shoot out one of the car’s tires. Shortly afterwards, the suspect turned onto 204th Street just south of Lawtey. At that point, two CCSO marked patrol units (driven by Deputy Randy Harris and Sgt. Robert Curry) were able to use a box-in maneuver to make the suspect drive off the road and into a wooded area. The suspect was quickly taken into custody and no one was injured.
Nicholas T. Anderson,30, a transient from Jacksonville, was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to the Bradford County Jail and booked on local charges there for Fleeing & Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement. In addition, charges are pending in Clay County for the carjacking incident and additional charges for fleeing & eluding police. Anderson was arrested in 2007 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for Fleeing & Eluding Law enforcement as well.
CCSO Robbery detectives suspect that Nicholas Anderson is operating under an alias and that his real legal name is Nathaniel Carswell, from North Carolina. Detectives, however, continue their investigation into his full identity and his full criminal history.
