Welcome to the Woods back for its 11th year

Welcome to the Woods back for its 11th year

If you've ever wanted a chance to explore the woods, a golden opportunity takes place on May 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., during Welcome to the Woods at Seminole Forest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Lake County.

Welcome to the Woods is a guided event, now in its 11th year, to introduce Floridians to wildlife areas and recreational opportunities available there. Seminole Forest WMA is on State Road 46 west of the Wekiva River. The free event is sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Division of Forestry.

Participants will be able to fish at Bear Pond, hike along the Florida Scenic Trail, enjoy a hayride to Blackwater Creek, learn safe boating practices and then canoe along the creek.

In addition, there will be wildlife educational exhibits, including live snakes; a program on how prescribed burns benefit the state's ecosystem, featuring a helicopter that is used in the controlled burn process; and a demonstration by K-9 teams trained in natural resource scent work.

Participants should wear clothing suitable for light hiking and bring bug spray, sun protection, snacks and water.

Participants must register in advance by calling 352-732-1225 weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
