Unique Situation For Lions Draftee Campbell

Sports Reporter

When it comes to football players at Army the word draft usually isn't associated to football. However, that is all changing for one former Army Cadet. Caleb Campbell was selected to play professional football for the Detroit Lions.

He sat there with the ESPN cameras locked in on his full cadet uniform in anticipation as his name was called out with the 218th pick during Sunday's second round of the NFL Draft. This wasn't where Campbell thought he would be after playing his college years through.

Campbell will now enter the Lions training camp as a new exemption allows players to serve as a recruiter. Instead of leading a platoon into the war in Iraq, Campbell could one day be leading a team to the playoffs.

One would think that Campbell would have jumped at this opportunity, but Campbell remained persistent to leading his troops. After a little persuasion, he eventually came around.

Now the question will be if he's able to translate into a NFL player. Instead of playing defensive back for the Lions, Campbell will move over to linebacker. This should play dividends for his chances as he's no burner. One thing is for sure though, he'll have a nation behind him.
