Jags top picks are introduced
The Jags two top picks Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves had their first face-to-face with local media in the Jaguars locker room Sunday afternoon.
Harvey, the eighth overall pick of the draft, is expected to fill the role of an every-downs, pass-rushing defensive end. He has been penciled in for the premium right defensive end job.
While at the University of Florida, the 6'5" 271 lb Harvey closed out his career with 20.5 sacks for minus 158 yards, adding 31 stops for losses of 190 yards and eleven quarterback pressures. He registered 90 tackles (59 solos), as he recovered three fumbles, returning one nine yards. He also caused two fumbles and had six pass deflections.
Groves, because he’s smaller and considered to be an end-linebacker hybrid, is expected to fill the role of a pass-rush specialist. He will be used by Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams in different ways. The Jaguars traded up to a spot just ahead of the Steelers, who may have selected Groves as a perfect fit for the rush-linebacker position in their 3-4 defense.
In 11 games in 2007 at Auburn, Groves registered 38 tackles (23 solos). He had three sacks, seven stops for losses and led the Southeastern Conference with a career-high 23 quarterback pressures. He also caused a pair of fumbles, including one that a teammate returned for a touchdown.
