Missing teen, boyfriend charged with murder

PALATKA, FL - The 15-year-old girl who disappearance sparked a nation-wide Amber Alert last month and her boyfriend have been charged with murder in the death of a Melrose man.

Morgan Amanda Leppert and Toby Lee Lowry, 22, were charged today with first degree murder according to State Attorney John Tanner. They remain in custody in El Paso, Texas where they were found on Saturday. A grand jury will convene within the next couple of weeks to decide whether to indict.

The victim, 66-year-old Thomas Stewart was found murdered in his home on Saturday.

Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly said a phone call to Leppert’s cell phone from the Stewart home led their investigation. Authorities believe the duo killed Stewart to get a vehicle and that neither Lowry or Leppert knew their victim prior to the murder.
