BAKER COUNTY, FL - The extensive criminal history of Roderick Vernardd Haygood, 34, continued this week in Baker County felony court. And even though the prosecuting team only got
one conviction from two cases, the streak of months without an acquittal continued.
Haygood's second case, scheduled for Wednesday was declared a mistrial and will be rescheduled.
However, he was once again convicted of a drug-related offense Tuesday and was sentenced to five years to be served consecutively with the ten years he's currently serving.
According to the police report, Haygood was arrested November of 2006 and charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, resisting arrest and driving while license suspended or revoked.
A deputy reported that he saw a pickup truck in the ditch at the intersection of US 90 and CR 139. As the deputy approached the vehicle to see if he could render assistance, the driver continued spinning his wheels trying to extricate his vehicle.
When the deputy reached the driver's window, he noticed Haygood reaching for something in the middle of his truck that the deputy couldn't see.
Eventually, the driver left the truck but not before he grabbed the unknown object from the truck and a bag of popcorn. When the deputy eventually got Haygood subdued and under control he found multiple bags of marijuana already packaged for sale.
After arrest, Haygood made bail originally but that bail was revoked when he was arrested during January, 2007.
The five years to which Haygood was sentenced Tuesday will be served at the same time as the ten years he's currently serving.
According to the Department of Corrections, Haygood is currently eligible for release from state prison in April of 2017 following a conviction last December for trafficking in cocaine and obstructing a criminal investigation. The DOC states that his offense occurred January 9, 2007.
