GIRLS
THE HOLIDAY
Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place in their lives. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance.
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
After finding out her marriage is over, Frances Mayes takes a trip to Italy to escape. On impulse she buys an old villa. Her life takes an unexpected turn with new friends, new home, and a new love.
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S
Go old school with this Audrey Hepburn movie. Widely acclaimed and considered to be one of the classics of 20th century cinema, it features the stylish elegance of Hepburn as Golly Golightly in her little black dress, jewels and reed-thin cigarette holder. It got the complicated attraction and relationship between Holly and her neighbor Paul Varjak plus the Henri Mancini classic, Moon River.
PRETTY WOMAN
A modern take on the classic Cinderella story, this movie tells the tale of Vivian Ward, a streetwise "lady of the evening" and a lonely and troubled wealthy businessman Edward Lewis. Their chance meeting turns into a life-changing event for the both of them. Starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, this is a definite ten on the chick flick meter.
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
A romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, and it is probably known best for the deli scene where Meg Ryan’s character demonstrates... well, just rent the movie. But seriously, the movie touts love and friendship and no necessary in that order. Funny, yet somewhat bittersweet, the movie is a keeper.
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this timeless romantic classic. Playboy Nicky Ferrante meets night club singer Terry McKay aboard a ship bound for New York. They're both engaged to others, but vow to meet again in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. Bring out the tissues on this one. On the same note, check out SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE.
AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN
Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie.
STEEL MAGNOLIAS
Six divas of the silver screen - Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts - come together as bosom buddies in this hilarious and heartwarming story of life love and loss in a small Louisiana Parish. The ladies of all different walks of life look to each other for strength in good and bad times. The ultimate ‘chick flick.’
GUYS
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (or anything by Clint Eastwood)
Doodle-oodle-oo...wanh wanh wanh. Doodle-oodle-oo...wanh wanh wanh. It was the most memorable theme tune in Guy Movie history (until the theme from The Godfather), and it carried Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef across a dusty, Civil War-torn America in search of buried gold. Clint's cigar-smokin', poncho-wearin', bandito-splatterin' "Man With No Name" is the ultimate loner.
THE TERMINATOR
"I'll be back." Breathtaking special effects. Shotguns. Motorcycles. An orgy of relentless robotic power. If it’s not here, you don't need it.
SCARFACE
"Say hello to my little friend." As Cuban tough guy Tony Montana, Al Pacino is not a nice guy. But he lives the life, heads a mighty empire, and takes care of friends and enemies with the same
disdain. Intense violence and language, a chick flick this ain’t.
BLAZING SADDLES
This Western satire from Mel Brooks is sophomoric, dated, and racist... but absolutely hilarious. The bean scene alone makes it a classic "guy thing."
THE MATRIX
This epic has a new kind of male hero, the tough-guy, digital superdude and non-stop action.
THE UNTOUCHABLES
This trifecta of tough guys - Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, and Kevin Costner, join forces in Prohibition-era Chicago to retell the story of lawman Elliot Ness and mobster Al Capone. Lots of violence and male bonding. "He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way." A sure hit with any guy!
OFFICE SPACE
What can I say, it’s the only live-action feature by Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis and Butt-head. This is the sort of movie that sums up the attitudes of way too many office workers.
WE WERE SOLDIERS
In a place soon to be known as The Valley of Death, in a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 400 young soldiers were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history. A tribute to the nobility of men under fire, their common acts of uncommon valor, and their loyalty to and love for one another.
And the ULTIMATE GUY MOVIE:
THE GODFATHER
"I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse." "Nuff said.
