BAKER COUNTY, FL - A new sidewalk along County Road 139 has been completed and in less than one-third of the time allowed in the contract, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

The mile-long sidewalk was built by J.B. Coxwell Contracting Company of Jacksonville under a contract with the FDOT as part of a federally funded "enhancement" program designed to give citizens alternative ways to get around other than by car. The sidewalk was built on the east side of CR 139 between U.S. 90 and King Ruise Park in the Margaretta community in central Baker County.

"We had a good game plan that was executed well," said Eddie Greene, vice president of field operations for J.B. Coxwell. "But the local citizens contributed hugely to the success of this project. They worked well with us and communicated very well with us. It was a pleasure to work with them."

The sidewalk was completed in 26 days, or more than 50 days ahead of schedule. The cost was $270,961.50.

"The contractor was very organized," said FDOT project manager Doug Cardin. "They did things right the first time and didn’t have to go back and re-do any of their work. That really helped make this project come together as well as it did."

Baker County will be responsible for maintaining the sidewalk.
