Summer Sequel Season

Summer Sequel Season

Summer movie season is here and that means sun, fun, and sequels. That’s right, summer (and this fall) is sequel season at the movies, and ‘08 won’t disappoint. There aren't as many sequels as 2007, which is good (and also bad), but there are quite a few movies that "continue the story" as such.

Most Anticipated Sequels:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - RELEASED

It’s Indiana Jones! No really, it’s freakin’ INDIANA JONES!!! Yeah!!

It's 19 years since the events of The Last Crusade -- and Indiana Jones is living the quiet life of teaching. But when he learns of a Soviet plot involving a powerful relic known as the Crystal Skull, he soon finds himself thrust into the life he became famous for, taking him from the quiet life in Connecticut to the wilds of the jungles of Peru.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - RELEASED

A thousand years have passed since the Pevensie kids last journeyed to Narnia, and now they once again find themselves in the magical world where the evil King Miraz has taken over the throne. With the help of a heroic mouse and the rightful heir to the throne, Prince Caspian, the kids set out to overthrow the powerful king.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army - JULY 11

This time around, Hellboy and the BPRD must stop an uprising that threatens the border between our world and the invisible realm. With a megalomaniac Woodland Prince threatens to take advantage of the situation for his own purposes, it's up to the Right Hand of Doom to put an end to the madness.

The Dark Knight - JULY 17

Batman, Lieutenant Jim Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent form a pact to rid Gotham City of its local criminal menaces. It’s all going well until a mysterious criminal mastermind known as The Joker arrives in town to unleash a reign of chaos throughout the city. Batman Begins leaves behind the campiness of the previous films in an effort to reinvent the Batman character as the serious, dark superhero typically portrayed in the comic books.

The X-Files 2 - JULY 25

A decade later, the supernatural sleuths return to navigate a complicated, stand-alone story — as well as their even more complicated relationship. While the storyline remains as top secret as Area 51.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - AUGUST 1

The Mummy franchise returns, but this time around, daredevil explorer Rick O'Connell and his son, Alex, head to Asia to combat the resurrected shape shifter Emperor Han. The O'Connell's must stop the all-powerful mummy before his magic threatens to plunge the world in unending slavery.

Saw V - OCTOBER 24

Plot details for this fifth installment of the horror movie franchise, which centers on the mind-playing games the serial killer Jigsaw sets up for his victims, have not yet been revealed, but according to Wikipedia, the origins of Billy the red tricycle-riding puppet will be revealed; also, the film will explain what happened to Corbett, the daughter of Lynn Denlon and Jeff Reinhart, following the end of Saw III, when she was left in danger.

Quantum of Solace - NOVEMBER 7

Secret agent James Bond returns to Her Majesty’s Secret Service to investigate a mysterious criminal organization and also come to terms with the betrayal and death of his former lover, Vesper.

Casino Royale was a reboot of the franchise and the first to star Daniel Craig as James Bond. Royale serves as a prequel to the previous films, focusing on Bond’s early less-experienced years as an agent. Quantum of Solace is Royale’s direct sequel, seeing the reprisal of Craig as Bond dealing with the consequences of events that took place in Royale.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - NOVEMBER 21

Harry learns more about the evil Lord Voldemort’s past, as the young wizard and his friends prepare to face the Dark Lord’s minions. The Order and its efforts against the Death Eaters will feature prominently in Half-Blood Prince.

Star Trek XI - Originally scheduled for December 2008 -  NOW MAY 8, 2009

Technically this won’t be released this year, but did I mention it’s STAR TREK...

Based on characters from the 1960s TV series, this prequel chronicles the early years of James T. Kirk and his future crew of the Starship Enterprise during their time at Starfleet Academy and their first mission into outer space.
