"Florida's Rivers" is a look at the history and ecology of our state rivers
     Charles Boning, a man of many talents (he's a lawyer who not only is also an accomplished naturalist and writer, but even an astute photographer) has written a book entitled Florida's Rivers which, living up to its name, is an overview of all the major rivers of the state, organized by region.

Mayo man encounters sturgeon on Suwannee
     A Mayo man was slightly injured Friday when he was struck by a jumping sturgeon on the Suwannee River. This is the first reported sturgeon strike in 2008.

Leave wildlife alone, urges FWC
     This time of year, wildlife is on the move. Critters, such as alligators, may be looking for new bodies of water or mates; snakes may be searching for prey; bears may be foraging. While moving from one point to another, wildlife sometimes comes face to face with people.

New Gulf reef fish gear requirements coming soon
     The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds anglers that new rules go into effect June 1 requiring all people fishing from a vessel in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida for any reef fish species to carry and use circle hooks, dehooking devices and venting tools.

Beach-nesting birds need your help
     Beach-goers in St. Johns County have probably seen signs recently that say "Protected Bird Site, Area Closed" or "Keep Out, Bird Nesting Area." These signs surround an area on the beach, often associated with sand dunes, and are meant to help protect beach-nesting birds, including the threatened least tern.

FWC searches for coyote
     The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) stepped up its patrol and search in neighborhoods in Lee County where three reports of apparent coyote clashes with dogs have occurred in the past two weeks.
