CBS makes move at primetime MMA

The UFC may be the premium choice when it comes to mixed martial arts, but CBS may have put it on the map Saturday night. For many fans names like B.J. Penn and Jens Pulver may be bigger, but for most people MMA is totally new experience. Enter CBS' Elite EX series, and it's biggest draw Kimbo Slice.

Slice is the kind of fighter that brings people to feet. He's a mixed martial arts version of Mike Tyson. The former homeless man out of Miami draws because of his larger than life persona, and they love his knock out potential. If you need to know more about this fighter then search his name on Youtube. His many videos are worth the watch for adrenaline junkies.

In his first televised network appearance, Kimbo didn't live up to the internet hype, but the crowd didn't care. It was obvious the crowd was overly enthusiastic about Kimbo, but maybe they were left wanting a little more.

The crowd didn't get to see the quick knock out they would have liked, but Kimbo did receive a third round TKO decision over James Thompson. Slice's career is in the infant stages, but it's clear that he has the potential to be the sports biggest star. This could mean great things for the Elite XC, and great things for MMA as a whole. What will it mean for the UFC though? Most likely, nothing.

While Elite XC put on a host of entertaining fights on Saturday night, they didn't show the fan enough actual talent. The fights weren't human cockfighting, but they did border that edge. If CBS wants their brand of fighting to succeed they will eventually have to sign another of the sports big stars. I hear Tito Ortiz is available.
