Volunteers needed for St. Marys River monitoring projects

Volunteers needed for St. Marys River monitoring projects

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Nassau County Watershed Action Volunteer (WAV) Program is seeking volunteers to lend a helping hand with water quality monitoring at Kings Ferry and Scotts Landing along the St. Marys River.

The project needs several individuals or couples who will commit to sampling the water once a month for a year. The St. Johns River Water Management District will train volunteers to collect water samples and to use field analysis equipment.

Sponsored by the District and Nassau County, the WAV Program involves local residents in protecting water resources in their communities and throughout the watershed, or drainage basin.

Ongoing WAV projects in Nassau County include monitoring water quality in area waterways and ponds and cleaning up shorelines.

Volunteers also are needed to give educational presentations and demonstrations to school groups, civic associations, clubs and other organizations, and to distribute information at local events.

Anyone interested in volunteering for WAV projects may call Paula Staples, Nassau County WAV coordinator, at (904) 225-5613.
