Don’t Get Me Started

Why?

By ANDY HEFTY

JACKSONVILLE, FL - How many times have we hated that one-word question, repeated over and over again by a youngster wanting to know the reasons the grass is green and the sky is blue? All too often, we adults have had a few questions of our own, more complex of course. I’ve decided to provide you a list, in no particular order.

Why do presidential candidates spend over a hundred million dollars to campaign for a job that pays only $400,000 a year? OK, I’ll admit that having a 747 at your command, occupying the most powerful political office in the world, and enjoying power and prestige is tempting, but that’s an awful lot of money to spend for such a relatively meager salary.

Why is there only one shoe on the side of the road?

Why do people toss their burning cigarette butts out of their car when we are in the midst of a drought?

Why did Al Gore win the Nobel Peace Prize, when "global warming," "climate change," and a movie that’s about as truthful as Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 have absolutely nothing to do with war and peace?

Why hasn’t anyone in the State Department revoked the passport of former President Jimmy Carter? Why hasn’t anyone called his Nerf gun diplomacy into question? Why does anyone give him any credibility anymore?

Why don’t we have any new nuclear power plants springing forth all over the country? Why haven’t we enlisted the help of the US Navy to show America that nuclear power is clean, efficient, cheap, environmentally sound, and produces minimal waste? Why hasn’t the Bush Administration been touting the safety records of nuclear power, both here and abroad?

Why are we up to $4 per gallon of gas if our presence in Iraq is a "war for oil"?

Why hasn’t the mainstream press been shouting from the housetops about our continued success and imminent victory in Iraq?

Why does anyone give former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan any credibility? If he didn’t believe in Bush’s policies, he should have either spoken up or resigned. Why doesn’t anyone come right out and state that he has all the qualities of a dog -- except loyalty?

Why are people so obsessed over $4 per gallon of gas when they will plunk that same amount for a cup of "Four Bucks" coffee?

Why is Congress constantly holding hearings about the oil companies’ nine-cents-per-gallon profit when they confiscate 40 cents per gallon themselves?

Why are polar bears now considered threatened when their population has doubled since the 60s?

Why does anyone drive the hideous-looking Scion xB?

Why do crowds gasp so intensely when they see how many children I have that the barometric pressure actually falls? Why are people inclined to ask me whether we are Catholic, Mormon, or Amish? Why is it anyone’s business whether my wife and I will have any more? Why do people prefer to throw a party for a teenage girl about to give birth out of wedlock?

Why are our televisions bursting with (non) reality shows? Why would anyone want to appear on some of them? Why does it seem as if there is there no talent left in the Planet California? Why do people think a reality show is a proper way to pick a life-long mate?

Why did the state of Texas use tanks to confiscate children from the FLDS compound? Were they afraid of getting pelted with the Book of Mormon? Why did it take so long to return the children to their mothers?

Why are "wireless" carriers now referring to coffee shops with WiFi as a "jail"? Why do we think that people have a right to free wireless Internet access wherever they are?

Why don’t folks put their Blackberry phones down during meetings or face-to-face conversations?

Why do teens insist on "texting" each other when they can simply hit the little green button on the phone and actually speak?

Why hasn’t House Speaker Nancy Pelosi followed through on her campaign promise to have "the most ethical Congress" in history?

Why are you still reading this?
