CONCERT LOCATION: 10th Anniversary meetingThe Yulee Historic Council will celebrate its 10th anniversary at its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. June 26 at FCCJ's Nassau Center (76346 William Burgess Blvd., Yulee) in the Nassau Room. The program will include a presentation by special guest Heber MacWilliams, a descendant of William MacWilliams, who established a brickyard in Italia in the 1880's. MacWilliams secured a contract from David Yulee to make a million bricks at a site on the Transit Railroad. He named the town Italia because Florida was promoting itself as "America's Italy" at this time. Brick from Italia was used by a resident of Fernandina to construct the first brick house in town. Heber MacWilliams will travel from his home in Ohio for the presentation. For more information call 225-5133. Open House and dedication ceremonyAn Open House and dedication ceremony will be held at the old Wakulla County Courthouse June 23, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. State Secretary Kurt Browning will dedicate the building, which was just recently renovated by the Chamber of Commerce, originally built 1892/93, and is the only wooden courthouse in the state still in use. |
