One more round for the Open One more round for the OpenBy BRANDON FINLEY There are seventy two holes complete in the U.S. Open, but the competition will linger on through Monday. Two golfers outlasted the field with one being thirteen time major winner Tiger Woods, and the other being Rocco Mediate ranked number 157 in the world. The 45 year old Mediate looked like he would win after Woods hit his first shot in the bunker on the par 5 eighteenth hole, but Tiger closed in typical Tiger fashion. Instead of paring the hole like most golfers would have Woods lipped in a birdie put sending the crowd into a frenzy. The putt moved the golfers into a tie at one under par, and will mark the first playoff since 2001. That playoff was won by two time Open Champion, Ratief Goosen, over American Mark Brooks. Mediate will try to become the first golfer to take a major championship from Tiger when Woods is leading after 54 holes. The former division two star at Florida Southern, Mediate, has never been in this sort of situation, but played the final round with only one bogey on his card. For there to be a possible chance at the upset Rocco will be looking for Woods to struggle early. The back nine has been simply owned by Tiger this week, and he should be even more imposing staring down Mediate's back. If Rocco wants a chance to become U.S. Open champion he'll need to be up by at least a shot entering the final hole. Will it be Rocco's day or another notch on Tiger's belt? |
