Former Marshall star Johnathan Goddard dies in motorcycle accident
Former Marshall defensive end Johnathan Goddard died Sunday after a motorcycle accident in Clay County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Goddard was driving on Florida 16 when his
motorcycle went off the shoulder of the road at a high rate of speed and overturned about 7:40 p.m. Saturday, June 14. Goddard, 27,, a resident of Starke, was transported to Shands Jacksonville where he was pronounced dead.
"This is a terrible loss for our football family and our thoughts and prayers are with the Goddard family," Marshall coach Mark Snyder said.
Goddard was a defensive star at Ed White High School in Jacksonville and played at Marshall University, where he was the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year in 2004. He also was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player. He was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. He later played briefly for the Indianapolis Colts and the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush.
