One dead, one injured in separate ATV accidents

SANDERSON, FL - An ATV outing Sunday afternoon ended in tragedy when a 9-year-old Starke boy was thrown from an ATV and sustained fatal injuries.

William Blane Coburn, 9, was riding on an ATV being driving by Nathaniel D. Ryan, 26, of Glen St. Mary, when the accident occurred about 5:00 p.m. near Crews Road. Police said the ATV hit ruts in the dirt as it came around a curve and then hit a tree. Both riders were ejected.

Coburn was transported to Shands Jacksonville hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Ryan suffered minor injuries.

Another ATV accident involving a Jacksonville teenager sent the young man to the hospital with critical injuries.

According to reports by the Florida Highway Patrol, Matthew Williams, 18, was riding a 2005 Artic ATV on private property off Cow Pen Road in Baker County when the accident occurred around 3:00 p.m.

Williams was attempting to drive over a large mound of dirt when he lost control and fell. The ATV landed on top of him.
