Outdoor movies

Outdoor movies will be shown throughout July and August in Atlantic Beach. PG-rated movies will be shown at the Donner Park Community Center, 2072 George St., July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23, according to the city’s Recreation Programs and Special Events Department. The movies are free and open to the public. Activities such as basketball, kickball and Frisbee will begin at 7 p.m., and the movie will start between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

Participants can also receive a free food ticket between 7 and 8 p.m. for snacks such as hot dogs and chips, according to Department Director Timmy Johnson. However, food tickets will not be available once the movie begins.

The movie schedule is still being determined, but options include "Shrek 2," "Shrek 3," "Madagascar," "Cars," "Hook" and "High School Musical." "Happy Feet" will be the first movie shown.

The event is sponsored by the city of Atlantic Beach and the city of Jacksonville Parks Department. For more information call 247-5828.

Remembering the Post Office

The Amelia Island Museum of History will feature the exhibit "Remembering the Post Office on Centre" in the first floor Gaslight Gallery through Sept. 28. The exhibit features a series of 30 archival photographs documenting the historic building from excavation to completion, artifacts on loan from Postmaster Ron Steedley and clips of oral history projected on a large screen.

Oral histories of past and current postal employees were recorded for this exhibit in cooperation with Fernandina Beach High School students from Rob Hick's TV Production class and museum volunteer interviewers. This exhibit will highlight the historical significance of an artifact that may soon be changed forever.

Florida State Parks Shark Teeth

Little Talbot Island State Park

Park rangers will host a discussion on the different types of shark teeth that can be found on the area’s beaches. This program will take place at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island Cultural State Park. No reservations are necessary and the program is free. For more information, call (904) 251-2320.

Brown Bag Lunch Lecture: "Hurricanes"

Friday, July 11th Noon to 1:00 p.m.

Join Steve Letro, Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service in Jacksonville for a look at hurricanes. A professional meteorologist for over 30 years, Steve has also served as a TV and radio meteorologist, private consulting meteorologist, and as meteorologist for the South Florida Water Management District. Specializing in tropical meteorology and hurricanes, Steve is a long time member of the National Hurricane Center’s Hurricane Liaison Team and is a Vice President of the Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference. He also teaches tropical meteorology at State and national hurricane conferences, has authored numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and has appeared as a subject matter expert on hurricane related documentaries for the History Channel. Bring your lunches and questions for an enjoyable and informative presentation. There is no cost to attend the lecture.

AT&T Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament & Festival

The largest kingfish tournament in the country is held in Jacksonville each year. "Ragtime to Rock: The Musical Heritage of Jacksonville"

The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) presents "Ragtime to Rock: The Musical Heritage of Jacksonville" June 6 - Sept. 30. The temporary exhibit will feature music memorabilia and various other historic items from some of the most iconic and legendary musicians to ever visit The River City. Some of the items include a pair of Ray Charles’ Calvin Klein sunglasses, Slim Whitman’s guitar, a photo autographed by all four members of The Beatles, and a working jukebox. Jacksonville’s musical history is the main attraction of this exhibit showcasing local legends such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, The Allman Brothers and Slim Whitman, as well as contemporary recording artists Limp Bizkit, Yellowcard, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Scalpel to Sketch

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens brings a unique exhibit to explore. On display July 10 - Sept. 28, Scalpel to Sketch: the science and beauty of medical illustration at Mayo Clinic features works from Mayo Clinic's world-class collection of medical illustration. This is one of the largest collections of its kind in the world and is rarely exhibited to the public. Visitors explore interpretations of the human form, animated voyages inside the human body, studies of the brain to molecules and gene clusters, skeletons, and a rare look at the unique anatomy of conjoined twins.
