Nadal wins Wimbledon Nadal wins WimbledonBy BRANDON FINLEY Nearly five hours of tennis had taken place when Roger Federer watched his forehand shot hover into the net. As the ball fell to the grown so did Rafael Nadal as he had captured his first ever Wimbledon championship. It also may have ended the greatest tennis match in history. It was the equivalent of getting Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson into a playoff for the Masters. Perhaps it was even a little better. Federer had long been considered the king of the grass court, while Nadal had been referred to as the king of clay. However, it was clear coming in that Federer was the king of tennis. He had won five straight Wimbledon titles. By the time the match was over John McEnroe had called it, "the greatest match I've ever seen." The win marked the fifth grand slam title of Nadals' career, while Federer will remain two shy of the all time mark currently held by Pete Sampras. More importantly, we may be seeing a shift in the power ranks of tennis. Federer has had a strong hold on the sport over the last half decade, but with the win Nadal now holds a 12-6 record against the world's top ranked player. Perhaps we could even see a rivalry develop like we had during the seventies and eighties in the sport. If the two play a couple more matches like this the sport could begin to draw in a dying crowd. |
