Assistance available to pay electric bills

NASSAU COUNTY, FL - Along with rising temperatures come rising utility bills.

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) wants Floridians who are struggling to pay summer's higher utility bills to know that help may be available.

"Higher fuel costs are impacting the bottom line for Floridians on everything from utility bills to groceries," Chairman Matthew M. Carter II said. "Everyone is feeling the economic crunch, and many utility companies, as well as local charities, have programs available to assist residents."

Utility customers experiencing financial hardship may contact Beaches Energy Services, JEA or BEAM to inquire about financial assistance for utility bills. Customers can also call the PSC's consumer assistance line at 800-342-3552 for more information about programs in their area.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal, statewide program to provide home energy assistance. LIHEAP assists households that have incomes below 150 percent of the federal poverty level and need assistance to pay their power bills.

International high school exchange students

International high school exchange students are coming to study in Baker County during the 2008-09 school year. These students will integrate themselves into a Baker County family with the goal of experiencing American culture as an American high school student does. In turn they will provide insight into their own culture.

STS Foundation, a non profit student exchange organization, is proud to help facilitate these relationships. They have been doing so for the past 20 years and look forward to finding new host families in Baker County and connecting them with exchange students. Students like Victor, who is a 16 year old boy from Jaboticabal, Brazil. He enjoys playing soccer and tennis; he says he is very interested in learning about the American way of life. Louise is a 17 year old girl from Stockholm, Sweden who loves playing and coaching tennis. She also enjoys participating in track and field events and is excited to experience the "school spirit" of an American high school. They are both excellent students and will have their own spending money and health insurance.

The host family provides a separate bed, family meals and a safe environment. If your family is interested in being a host family please call Lillian at 1-800-522-4678 or send an email to lillian@stsfoundation.org. For more information visit www.stsfoundation.org
