Downtown businesses in Lake City have to remove signs, items from sidewalk

The opportunity to enjoy a nice cold beverage and a snack as well as peruse the latest gift items may be a thing of the past along downtown Lake City streets. Several business owners along Marion Avenue have been warned that their items and some signs have to be removed since they are on state right-of-way.

Unfortunately, that is one of the very things that gives Marion Street such a nice, friendly downtown feel say residents. With Marion Avenue also being U.S. Highway 441, everything from the front wall of the buildings is in a state right-of-way.

The Downtown Action Corporation, a non-profit, private group that is made up of local business owners, is working with the city in an effort to revise the rules if possible to allow certain exceptions. They have been instrumental in restoring the historic and traditional feel to downtown Lake City.
