The Springs Celebration, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature displays and activities designed to demonstrate the importance of Florida’s springs and to foster appreciation and respect for these natural resources. The celebration is sponsored by the St. Johns River Water Management District, Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, Santa Fe Springs Working Group, North Central Florida YMCA, and Current Problems Inc. Highlights include educational interactive water activities and live animal exhibits, as well as live music for all ages by Patchwork, Dale Crider, Bob Patterson and Palm Valley. Jazz & Wine"Blue Monday Jazz and Wine Concert" featuring the Les DeMerle Band with Bonnie Eisele and special guests Al Waters, saxophone and flute, and Doug Matthews, keyboards, will be held July 28 from 7-10 p.m. at the Intercoastal Wine Company, 10 N. Movie Night at Donner ParkThe City of Atlantic Beach and JaxParks presents Movie Night at Donner Park on August 9 at dusk outdoors. CARS is a high-octane adventure comedy that shows life is about the journey, not the finish line. There's more to life than trophies and fame. Hotshot rookie race car is living life in the fast lane until he hits a detour on his way to the most important race of his life. "Cars" is full of freewheeling fun for everyone. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets to enjoy a night at the park with friends and neighbors. Pick up a ticket between 7:00 and 8:00 pm for free refreshments. Remembering the Post OfficeThe Amelia Island Museum of History will feature the exhibit "Remembering the Post Office on Centre" in the first floor Gaslight Gallery through Sept. 28. The exhibit features a series of 30 archival photographs documenting the historic building from excavation to completion, artifacts on loan from Postmaster Ron Steedley and clips of oral history projected on a large screen. Oral histories of past and current postal employees were recorded for this exhibit in cooperation with Fernandina Beach High School students from Rob Hick's TV Production class and museum volunteer interviewers. This exhibit will highlight the historical significance of an artifact that may soon be changed forever. A growing portion of the Amelia Island Museum of History's archives, including the full collection of post office photographs, can now be viewed online at www.ameliamuseum.org. Mark Your Calendar...Riverside Arts FestivalIn its 37th year, the Riverside Arts Festival is one of the South’s premier juried art competitions, attracting hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors to historic Riverside Park. This year, the Festival will be held September 6th and 7th, from 10 am to 5 pm. The eclectic Five Points area provides a vibrant gateway for those attending the festival, which features watercolors, oils, glass, pastels, drawings, clay, photography, wood, acrylics, fiber, graphics, metal, paper and mixed media, as well as a terrific Art Activities tent for kids. There is always plenty of food, fun, and music to accompany the art, and the highly regarded (and free!) guided bus tours of the district are not to be missed. |
