Record broken after 101 years

Sports Columnist

They say that records are meant to be broken, but the latest MLB record to fall seemed to be one that would stand the test of time. After all, the record had already reached the century mark, and nobody had really tested breaking it.

All of this came to a change though when the Oakland Athletics put rookie Brad Ziegler on the mound for the first time. Through the season he had already pitched twenty five consecutive scoreless innings setting up a chance for Ziegler to break the 101 year record against the Texas Rangers.

The record for the mark held by a rookie was previously held by George McQuillan when he broke into the league with 25 consecutive scoreless innings back in 1907. When Ziegler went to the mound he took the ball for two innings against the Rangers, and in perfect style set down the Rangers for two more scoreless innings.

The two innings of work made Ziegler's record on the year 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in twenty three appearances on the season.

Ziegler had this to say about his record breaking performance, "It's real special. I feel I worked hard to get here and never at any point in my career have I had anything handed to me. There are so many records that seem incredible that are broken and didn't last as near as long as (McQuillan's) did. There have been a lot of great pitchers in the last 100 years that have debuted, and to be at the top of that list at this point is just great. It feels good."
