Sanderson man killed in Thursday storms

Reports cite speed as crash of crash

James Heard, 59, of Sanderson, was killed Thursday morning in a wreck on U.S. Highway 90 near Columbia Correctional Institution, approximately 5.7 miles east of Lake City.

According to reports by the Florida Highway Patrol, Heard was traveling east on U.S. 90 during heavy rains when his car hydroplaned on standing water near the edge of the roadway and sideswiped a westbound truck driven by Edwin Noble Jr., 48, of Wellborn, Florida.

The car continued to spin off the road and hit a pine tree at the driver’s door area. Heard was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Noble was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

FHP reports note that Heard was "traveling too fast for the current weather conditions."
