Josh Kinsey takes home low amateur honors at Gate PGA Invitational
Josh Kinsey wrapped up his stellar summer of golf on Tuesday by winning the amateur competition in dramatic fashion at the prestigious Gate PGA Invitational on the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Ocean Course.
Trailing by one on the final hole, Kinsey rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt amid windy conditions on the 18th hole to force a sudden death playoff with Erik Downs. On the first playoff hole, Kinsey rolled in three-foot par putt to win the amateur title.
"I’m at a loss for word right now, it just hasn’t set in yet," Kinsey said. "It’s a relief to finally break through for a win. I’ve been waiting for this for awhile and it’s great to get in position to win and finish it off."
The birdie on the final hole gave him a one-under par 71 and a tie for third place in the overall competition that includes some of the top local amateurs and professionals in the First Coast area.
He opened the tournament with an even-par 72 and followed with a four-under par 68 to sit in a tie for fourth place entering the final round, but leading the amateur competition.
"This is a great experience for Josh and one that we look to build on this fall when we start our season," said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. "Josh is a very talented young man that will be a major contributor for us this season."
