Columbia voters elect Millikin superintendent
Mike Millikin unseated incumbent Grady D. "Sam" Markham for the office of Superintendent of Schools with 52 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election. Millikin has 28 years of educational
experience and has served as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, adult educator, district level director and assistant superintendent of schools.
He received 7,456 votes to Markham’s 4,339 or 31 percent. The third candidate, Cesta Newman gathered 17 percent and 2,424.
Sheriff Bill Gootee faced three challengers: Mark Hunter, Wayne Keen and Keith Slanker. He received 43 percent or 6,112 votes. Hunter got 4,518 (31.6%); Keen 2,708 (18.9%); and Slanker 933 (6.53%). Sheriff Gootee got the most votes, although with only 43 percent of the votes in the nonpartisan race, he'll face a runoff with Mark Hunter in November.
The winner will meet GOP challenger David Barnes. Barnes garnered 63 percent with 1,192 votes to Mike Juliano’s 699 votes (37%).
