Re-introducing Coach Nelson

By JOHN MCCOY

Re-introducing Coach Nelson

West Nassau High School has a new head football coach. With more than 27 years experience as a head coach, George A. Nelson is no newcomer to West Nassau High. He'd been here for three years then went to Yulee for two years and is now back at West Nassau again.

Coach Nelson

Coach Nelson had been coaching football in Texas for five years before getting his first position as a head coach at LaBelle High School nearly 28 years ago. LaBelle is located near Fort Myers, FL.

"We have a real good nucleus," Coach Nelson said, "but we've got a lot of catch up work to do because of weather setbacks. I had hoped to get an idea of how we were doing last Friday but (Tropical Storm) Fay prevented that. I'm looking forward to the Friday game at Baker County High School to get things ironed out."

West Nassau High School Principal Ron Booker reported that the "Fall Classic," originally scheduled in Callahan for this Friday, has been transferred to Baker County High School in Glen St. Mary. West Nassau's playing and practice fields, mostly underwater since last week, are expected to still be soggy on Friday. The game will begin at 7:30 pm.

Always an important game, this time it has special significance. "Fifty percent of the gate (17.5% from both West Nassau and Baker County High Schools and 15% from the Florida High School Athletic Association) will be given to the family of injured Baker County football player Milton Johnson to help defray some of the expenses resulting from his injury." Johnson suffered a serious injury during a scrimmage on August 19th.

"Everyone who is able should come," Mr. Booker said.
