Car or van pools save cash
     Gas prices are soaring. For easier calculation, let's figure I get about 20 miles per gallon from my Grand Caravan. If I drive 30 miles each way (60 miles round trip), five days a week, I'm traveling 300 miles and spending about $60 just to go back and forth to work each week.

FWC officers deploy for Louisiana search-and-rescue
     As Hurricane Gustav pounded the northern Gulf Coast Monday, 34 law enforcement personnel from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) assembled at Milton High School to move in behind the storm.

Land purchased for Heritage Park expansion
     The City of Macclenny recently used funds from a FERDAP (Florida Department of Environmental Protection Recreational Development Assistance Program) grant to acquire two acres of land which will be used to expand parking at Heritage Park. Owner Brian Yarbrough was paid $101,246 with closing costs, for the property that is directly behind the historical themed park on Sandra Street.

Raulerson kicks off campaign
     Baker County School Board Superintendent candidate Sherrie Raulerson kicked off her campaign with a chicken and rice dinner. Inside the Baker County Fairgrounds main hall, upwards of 300-500 gathered for dinner and entertainment.

Long recovery ahead for Wildcat player
     Baker County High School Wildcat football player Milton Oshay Johnson remains hospitalized at Shands Jacksonville’s Trauma Center after suffering a spinal injury during practice on August 19. Johnson, 15, is a sophomore at Baker County High School in Glen St. Mary. His parents are Milton Johnson, Jr. and Adrium Jefferson.

A first in the history of literature
     Veteran journalist and author George Duncan was abruptly fired from his job at The Baker County Standard in Macclenny, Florida this past week. The reason? According to interim editor Michelle Harris, the Board of Directors led by LaViece Smallwood decided to terminate him after he received a book review by North Florida News Daily.

     The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP) join motorcyclists to promote the new motorcycle safety campaign. This statewide initiative, which runs through September, focuses on promoting motorcycle visibility and safety in an effort to reduce fatalities on Florida’s roadways.

New male Bonobo reunited with mother at Jacksonville Zoo
     Mabruki, a robust 26-year-old male bonobo who first arrived from the Fort Worth Zoo on May 14, 2008, is now on exhibit in the Great Apes’ bonobo yard at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Lorel, a 39-year-old female bonobo who is the matriarch at the Zoo, birthed Mabruki at the Yerkes National Primate Reserve Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Mother and son were reunited for the first time since he was nine, when Mabruki was transferred from the Yerkes Center to the Fort Worth Zoo.
