Long recovery ahead for Wildcat player
Baker County High School Wildcat football player Milton Oshay Johnson remains hospitalized at Shands Jacksonville’s Trauma Center after suffering a spinal injury during practice on August 19. Johnson, 15, is a sophomore at Baker County High School in Glen St. Mary. His parents are Milton Johnson, Jr. and Adrium Jefferson.
But on Friday, August 29, his teammates, coaches, and community came together to support his family and raise money for his on-going medical expenses. Fifty percent of the gate (17.5% from both West Nassau and Baker County High Schools and 15% from the Florida High School Athletic Association) was set aside from the kick-off classic between Baker County and West Nassau to help defray some of the expenses resulting from his injury.
According to a family member, Johnson broke the C3 vertebra in his neck during one of the last plays at practice that day. The spinal cord is not severed, but suffered major trauma. He has been fitted with a halo brace to stabilize his neck and head, but remains paralyzed.
Head Coach Bobby Johns said, "Milton is a tremendous athlete. He's got a tremendous heart and will never give up. He'll fight this as hard as he can and we're not going to quit fighting for him."
An account for Johnson has been set up with VyStar Credit Union. The account number is 0702742751.
