One foot from the goal line

By JOHN MCCOY

One foot from the goal line

Hilliard played a scrimmage game against the Fernandina Beach Pirates Friday evening. The game started at 7:30 pm with isolated thunderstorms forecasted. There had been some drizzles and some sheet lightning in the distance but the teams came on the field and play began.

Minutes into the first quarter, Fernandina punted on fourth down. The ball missed the end zone, going out of bounds one foot from the goal line leaving the Flashes deep in the own territory.

It was a hard-played first quarter with several great passes and good runs by both teams. The Pirates pulled off a hard sack of the Hilliard quarterback before the quarter ended.

Just minutes into the second quarter there were several bolts of lighting and crashes of thunder and officials decided to delay the game.

At 9:00 p.m. the game was officially called for lightning.

Hilliard will meet the Matanzas High Pirates at Palm Coast on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
