JU drops 3-1 contest to UNF in first battle of SunTrust River City Rumble
     Despite an early lead in the match, the Dolphins could not find the rhythm to put things away as the JU volleyball team fell to cross-town rival North Florida, 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 21-25, 23-25), in the first installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble Tuesday night at UNF Arena.

Florida defense slams door on Hurricanes
     The Florida Gators offense may have struggled against the Miami Hurricanes in the first half of Saturday’s showdown in the Swamp, but the Gators defensive unit left no doubts about who was in control. They never allowed Miami inside the their 30 yard line, while holding the Canes to a single field goal on their way to securing the Gator’s first win in the big rivalry game since 1985.

Seminoles pound Western Carolina
Largest margin of victory in history of FSU
     Bobby Bowden entered his 33rd season Saturday as coach of the Seminoles technically one game behind Penn State coach Joe Paterno as the winningest coach in Bowl Championship Series (BCS) football. And after starting the game nearly 90 minutes late due to rain, Bowden once again tied Paterno with a convincing 69-0 trouncing of the Western Carolina Catamounts.

Georgia wins over Chippewas
     Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt is unbeaten at home and in Saturday’s game with the Central Michigan University Chippewas his team kept that streak alive. The Dawgs were looking to send message after their team fell from the number one preseason ranking spot despite a solid win last week.

Christian Ponder answers the quarterback question
     For the third time since the 2000 season the Seminoles started the season with an untested young quarterback. And for the first time since Chris Weinke left the team, a young man stepped up to the task. Christian Ponder got the start Saturday as a 20-year-old red shirt sophomore replacing senior Drew Weatherford. He led the team to a 35-0 third quarter lead before being pulled to give the second team players some experience.

Dolphins fall at #1 Appalachian State, 56-7
     The JU football program made its debut on the big-time stage Saturday against top-ranked Appalachian State. In front of a school-record crowd of 30,718 at Kidd-Brewer Stadium, Appalachian State showed why they are the three-time defending national champions, running away from the Dolphins, 56-7.

Women’s cross country wins JU/UNF 2x1 Relay
     The JU women’s cross country rose to the occasion for the second straight week to win the JU/UNF 2x1 Relay on Saturday morning on Thompson Track at the Ashley Sports Complex. The Dolphins’ women edged out their cross-town rival UNF to win 10-to-11, while the Osprey men won their side of the meet.

Gators out-hit Dolphins in first meet since 2005
     No. 8/9 Florida recorded its highest team hitting percentage (.521) since Sept. 28, 2003, and the Gators continued their Sunshine State success Friday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) win against Jacksonville on the opening day of the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

Volleyball ends weekend with a 3-0 loss to Florida A&M
     The JU volleyball team did not have the finish it was looking for to end the weekend as the Dolphins fell to Florida A&M, 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 22-25), Saturday afternoon in the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational Tournament at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
