Schools honored are academically superior or show dramatic gains in student achievement
     U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today named 320 schools as 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools. The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

State Road 231 to temporarily close section for road work
     A short section of State Road 231 (Southwest Sixth Avenue) between State Road 100 and Southwest First Street is scheduled to be totally closed to all traffic Monday, September 15 to Wednesday, September 17 (weather pending) to allow construction crews to reconstruct the roadway, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

     Columbia County Sheriff Bill Gootee made a special presentation Thursday to the Student Government Organization at Columbia and Fort White high schools. He presented each school with a check for $960, monies raised by the CSO.

Heritage Park... Boon or Boondoggle?

     What started out as a way for old friends to preserve a kindler, gentler time has turned into a municipal boondoggle with very little financial oversight. A four-month investigation into the financial aspects of the City of Macclenny-owned Baker County Heritage Park has uncovered a paper trail that points to the commingling of public and private monies and deceptive practices.

UNF Coastal Biology Program launches new Fall lecture series
     The Coastal Biology Program at the University of North Florida will host the Sol and Leslie Brotman public lecture series this fall, beginning with the inaugural lecture at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the University Center on campus.
