State Road 231 to temporarily close section for road work

State Road 231 to temporarily close section for road work

LAKE CITY, FL - A short section of State Road 231 (Southwest Sixth Avenue) between State Road 100 and Southwest First Street is scheduled to be totally closed to all traffic Monday, September 15 to Wednesday, September 17 (weather pending) to allow construction crews to reconstruct the roadway, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Through traffic will be detoured to State Road 100 and either to Southwest 12th Avenue, if headed eastbound, or State Road 121 (Southwest Sixth Street), if headed westbound. Eastbound traffic can then turn onto either State Road 238 (Southwest Second Street) or to State Road 121 (Southwest Sixth Street) to continue south on State Road 231.

Local traffic can use city streets to access those businesses and homes along Southwest First Street. All business and residential access will be maintained during the road closure.

The closure will allow crews to remove the "hump" in the road where the old railroad bed is located. There are no businesses or driveways located in the closed section.

The work is part of a $2.4 million road improvement project that began in late July and scheduled to be completed by early 2009.

The project also includes resurfacing State Road 231 from State Road 100 to just south of the Reception and Medical Center. Also, the traffic signals at the intersections with State Road 100 and State Road 121 are being replaced and the intersections widened to accommodate wider turns by semi-trucks.
