     Two Live Oak residents were injured when a sturgeon jumped into a boat cruising down the Suwannee River Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Expect fish kills throughout region
     The recent rains and cloudy skies are causing more than just flooding problems along the St. Johns River and other rivers and lakes in Central Florida. Residents have been reporting fish kills in various areas, and fisheries biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) think the number and severity of fish kills will increase over the next several weeks.

FWC: "Let sea turtles ride out Ike"
     People attempting to save sea turtles eggs and hatchlings may cause more harm than good, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advises. Although storms can have a negative effect on sea turtle nests and hatchlings, these animals have evolved to have nesting strategies that enable them to survive natural events such as hurricanes. No storm season is a total loss to sea turtles, even in years when Florida has sustained direct hits.

Get your hunt on early; pull back on a string
     Summer’s officially over, even though you can’t tell ’cause it’s still so hot and sticky outside. We’ve finished our preseason scouting and hung our tree stands along well-traveled deer trails, hopefully next to a mature oak tree that’ll begin dropping acorns soon. Finally – the time of year we’ve been waiting for is here – the beginning of football season, and better yet, opening day of hunting season, specifically archery.

New rules for Alligator Lake Public Small Game Hunting Area
     There are a few new rules this year on Alligator Lake Public Small Game Hunting Area in Columbia County that the public needs to be aware of. To provide an equitable hunting opportunity that is compatible with other recreational users, hunt days on the north marsh area will be Mondays and Thursdays, instead of Tuesdays and Thursdays. On the south marsh, hunt days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
