Union Tigers out score Trojans Union Tigers out score TrojansStory and photos by ADRIAN WILLIAMS CHAPMAN Friday night's game between the Union County Tigers and the Hamilton County Trojans was full of great offense, defense, and flags everywhere. The Tigers were the first team to get the ball, but came up short and had to punt on 4th down. Hamilton County went three and out on their first possession as well.
On the second Union County possession, #4 QB Chris Alexander was picked off by #11, Rafael Balleza of the Trojans. The Trojans still had no luck and wound up having to punt it away once again. On the Tigers' next possession, QB Alvin Jernigan ran down the sideline for a first down. The Tigers were called on a dead ball foul, making it 2nd and 15. The snap to was to Jernigan, and he was immediately hit, causing a fumble. The ball was then picked up by #52, Joel Zamora of the Trojans, and he ran down the field to score the first touchdown of the game. The PAT was good and the Trojans led 7-0. The Trojan kickoff was returned by #8, Bryan Holmes out to around the 40 yard line of the Tigers. On 2nd down, Tiger QB Alexander found #5 Deven Perry open down field and
The Tigers' first kickoff of the game was caught at the 10 yard line, and then after gaining only a few yards it was fumbled by the Hamilton County player and the Tigers recovered, giving them the ball at the Trojan 14 yard line. The Tigers started this possession with a pass to #7, Adam Cason who is stopped just short of the goal line by Hamilton County's #24, Bo Merine. It took the Tigers just 2 more plays to take it into the end zone. Their 2 point conversion failed making the score 14-7, Tigers. Kavin Dobson, #23 of the Trojans was the return man on the kickoff. With his catch and decent return, the Trojans had a 1st and 10 from their own 33 yard line. After only a few plays, Trojan QB #14, Alex Murphy rolled to the right for the handoff, was hit by TE for the Tigers, Brodie Ellis - #85. That caused a fumble and the Tigers recovered. Union County is unable to capitalize on the mistake and Dalton Cochran, #53 has to punt it away. On this Trojan possession, they come up short. They fake the punt and the pass by Balleza is incomplete allowing the Tigers to take over on downs at the Trojan 34 yard line. The next Tiger TD is set up with a 28 yard pass play from Alexander to #86, Tiger wide
After the Tiger kickoff, the Trojan return man is brought down by Tiger Special Teams player #44, Mason Dukes ending the half. The second half started with the Trojans getting the ball. Thanks to a Tiger penalty they got a first down and the drive continued. A couple of plays later, the Trojan QB is sacked by Tiger defense man, Lonnie Gosha, #24. This sack allowed the Tiger Defense to maintain the flow of the game and denied a Trojan first down. Looking at 4th and 23, the Trojans punted. The Tigers took over on downs but were not able to score due to an interception when Alexander's pass was picked off by Trojan player, Merine. It almost looked like the Trojans would once again lose possession, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave them an automatic 1st down. They just couldn't get the momentum going, and on 4th and long of the next set of downs, the Trojans had to punt once again. Adam Cason, #7 for the Tigers, was back to receive the kick. He brought the ball out just past the 15 yard line where the Tigers started a new drive. On 4th and short they decide to "go for it", and a facemask penalty by the Trojan's #42, Robert Davis gives the Tigers an automatic first down. The next Tiger TD came on 4th down. Alexander was forced out of the pocket, but able to get the ball off to Tiger WR, #17 Quentin Johnson. The two point conversion was good and the Tigers now led 30-7. After the Tiger kickoff, the Trojans started a new drive on their own 8 yard line. The Trojan QB was forced back into the end zone, giving the Tigers a safety, and also allowing them to once again get the ball after the Trojan kickoff from their own 20 yard line. The kick went to Tigers' Lonnie Gosha and he barreled head first down the sideline into a flock of Trojan defenders. On the Tiger 3rd down play, Smith, RB for the Tigers got a great run! At the end of the run, words were exchanged and only one man was charged with a penalty. Smith was charged with "intimidating the defense". This penalty took the ball back to the 49 yard line where it didn't take long for the Tigers to score
The following kickoff resulted in a touchback and the Trojans had the ball at the 20. The Trojans make one first down, and then on the first play of the next set of downs, the QB is tripped up by Tiger's #56 Kevin Wethy, and brought down by #79, Jacob Merriex. After the sack, the Trojans couldn't recover and on 4th and 14 the Trojan QB attempted a long pass, but was unsuccessful. Tigers then took over on downs at the Trojan's 33 yard line. Deven Perry and Justin Tyson would both run for touchdowns that would both be called back due to holding penalties. On the last play, QB Alvin Jernigan would take a knee to end the game. Tigers 40 Trojans 7. Coach Andrew Zow said that he felt "outstanding" about their win tonight. He went on to say that "the team came out, played well, and got the job done". As for their match up against West Nassau next week, he replied, "The team will be the same, we're improving every day and we just have to eliminate our mistakes. If we can go out and play hard, I think we'll be ok". Coach Al Nelson of the Hamilton County Trojans was asked for his thoughts on tonight's game, and he said, "We came out good, we're a young team and a little inexperienced. The guys played hard throughout the game, and didn’t ever give up." Next week the Tigers will face off at West Nassau and the Trojans will face Chiefland on their home field.
