Jaguars lose opener to Titans, 17-10

For the second time in as many years, the Tennessee Titans spoiled the season opener for the Jaguars handing them a loss just as the season gets underway.

The opening day loss came with seven sacks and two interceptions on quarterback David

Garrard and 187 yards offense, with only 33 yards rushing by what was the NFL's second-best rushing team last year.

The Jags came into the game without starting center Brad Meester with a torn bicep and tackle Richard Collier, who was critically shot last week. Mo Williams sustained a biceps injury in pregame warm-ups and Vince Manuwai a knee injury in the second half. Uche Nwaneri also injured his knee, but was able to return to the game.

"In no way is this team looking for any kind of an alibi. We’re going to go back to work and come out ready to roll next weekend," coach Jack Del Rio said.

The Jaguars were in Titian territory nine times, but were unable to capitalize on field position and move the ball into the end zone. The only touchdown came on a 1-yard pass from Garrard to Greg Jones after an interception set up by Gerald Sensabaugh. A 27-yard field goal by Josh Scobee made the final score 17-10.

"There were 3-4 possessions I can think of; in the scoring zone, where you need to be coming out of there with points and didn’t. It let them play the game they wanted to," said Del Rio. "We just weren’t able to get on top and make them play chase."

The Jaguars will host the Buffalo Bills next Sunday in the first home game of the season.
