Travel Packing Tips

(Family Features) Whether it's for business or pleasure, a quick weekend getaway or an extended vacation, travelers all face the packing challenge: what to take and how to pack it?

To help simplify the process of traveling light and avoid those checked luggage fees, here are a few packing tips from the organizing experts at ClosetMaid®.

Wardrobe. Instead of gambling on a suitcase full of random items, set aside a little time to plan your wardrobe. Think about the places you'll visit and what you'll be doing, both day and evening, and set out a possible outfit for each one. Then begin eliminating items, starting with clothes you might only wear once.

  • Take basic pieces that can tackle multiple occasions. A dark skirt or pants can see you through sightseeing during the day and, with a few accessories, a fancy restaurant at night.

  • Coordinate colors so that you have different looks with just a few items.

  • Choose fabrics that don't wrinkle, or that spot clean easily.

  • Pick versatile shoes that work with casual and dressy clothes.

  • Basic rule of thumb: when in doubt, leave it out.

Once you've settled on a wardrobe, make sure your clothes are clean and ready to go. Ironing before you pack helps cut down on wrinkles.

Essentials. Keeping a travel toiletry kit permanently packed and ready to go will save you a lot of time, especially for a last minute excursion. Stock it with travel-sized necessities - if you run out of something on the trip, you can always replace it! Other items to consider: a small first-aid kit, sunscreen and a small bottle of fabric wash for emergency, in-room laundry.

Packing. There are different ways to fold clothes for your suitcase. Some travelers prefer to fold everything as usual, while others like to roll it all up. Practice fitting everything in your suitcase to see what works best for you.

  • Try to pack chronologically, placing the items to be worn first on top. This helps prevent rooting around the suitcase for a specific item and messing up the rest.

  • Use what otherwise would be wasted space - tuck things like socks or ties inside shoes.

  • Never pack travel documents, medications, jewelry or traveler's checks into checked baggage. Always keep them with you in a carry-on bag.

Packing is even easier when your starting place - the closet - is organized and ready to go. Custom-designed and professionally installed systems such as ClosetMaid MasterSuite® have accessories including expandable Valet Rods that give you a convenient way to see wardrobe choices and keep freshly ironed clothes wrinkle free. Business travelers can keep basic travel items all together in one drawer or wire basket.

A little organization really does go a long way and will eliminate stress before you travel away from home - even on a short trip.
