VA will dedicate new cemetery Sunday
     POSTED 09/19/08 - Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs William F. Tuerk will be a major speaker at the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony for the new Jacksonville National Cemetery this weekend. He'll be joined by key Veterans Affairs and local elected officials. Other events include the unveiling of the dedication plaque, a ceremonial ground breaking and military honors.

     POSTED 09/18/08 - Barry Collins, in costume, provided an excellent rendition of one of most important patriotic speeches in our nation's history. Patrick Henry's speech ending with the words "Give me liberty or give me death!" was, for me, the best part of the Patriotic Evening held in Callahan Thursday evening.

Glen tightens parking, code enforcement ordinances
     POSTED 09/17/08 - The town of Glen St. Mary took two steps toward cleaning up the town at Tuesday night's council meeting. The council unanimously approved two ordinances and the budget for the coming fiscal year at their meeting.

FEMA Center opens in Nassau County
     POSTED 09-16/08 - A Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster recovery center opened Monday for property owners hit by Tropical Storm Fay. The recovery center is located at the Nassau County Tax Collector's Office on Mickler Street in Callahan. Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week to allow property owners to register for assistance.

Duval County school makeup days
     Tropical Storm Fay caused Duval County Public Schools' students to miss three days of school at the beginning of this school year. The district currently has five days built into the school calendar to make up any days missed due to weather.

First paved section of Palatka to Lake Butler State Trail officially opens
     State agencies joined with the City of Keystone Heights to celebrate the opening of the 5.2 mile, Clay County segment of the Palatka to Lake Butler (PLB) State Trail on Friday. The Clay County segment marks the completion of the first phase of the PLB State Trail which is in development along the former Norfolk-Southern Railroad right-of-way

SRWMD First Public Entity in Florida to Receive SFI Certification
     The Suwannee River Water Management District is pleased to announce that it is the first public entity in the state of Florida to receive certification of its lands under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Standard. A third-party audit was completed in July and found that the District was in conformance with the standard on all of its 160,000 acres of fee-owned lands.
