Sigma Chi’s Still Rock The House!

Sigma Chi’s Still Rock The House!

Sigma Chi - Eta Pi Chapter UCF ‘87

I wanted to see for my own eyes if my old fraternity knew how to throw a party before a big game. Mind you it’s been twenty some odd years since I participated in such an event, but I figured why not? This visit would be totally different, instead of being a single young man, yet to start my career, this time I visited the past a married man with my twenty-year-old daughter in tow.

Consul Jay Revell and house guests Valarie Falcone and Mike Repass.

It’s 5:00pm - two hours before kick off between the Florida State Seminoles and the Demon Deacon’s of Wake Forest. It’s party time in Tallahassee! A quick introduction to the chapter’s president (Consul) Jay Revell and an exchange of the necessary secret qualifiers to verify I am who I said I am, I suddenly had the run of the grounds to talk and snap pictures.

Revell, a self acclaimed want to be politician - he had this to say about the upcoming game's possible outcome. "It’s about time that FSU got back on the right track, and tonight’s game is it." And it was time for a quick photo op with house guests Valarie Falcone from Boca and visiting UCF student and Sigma Epsilon brother Mike Repass.

Side bar. The taller young man in the photo is Mike Repass. With a quick question or two about his last name, it was painfully apparent that although he and I had never met before, there was an odd and yet comforting kinship between he and I. It turns out, that his grandfather, Mr. Ivan Repass was none other than the legendary Boys Basketball Coach at Orlando Boone High School during the 1970s and later school administrator and finally out of retirement, the Head of Extended Adult Education classes located at Boone High School well into the 1980s. Ivan Repass, a legend in the Orange County School System and a great personal friend of mine during my days at Boone and years after as

well. What a cool moment and great legacy.

After mingling through the crowd, a couple of Sigma Chi fall pledges made their way over for a comment about the game. Mitchell Masters, a freshman from Bishop Kenny had this to say: "FSU will kick their butts!" Fellow pledge and freshman from Bishop Kenny too had this to say: "It’s going to be a hard fought game, but FSU will come out on top."

After the small talk, I figured we would take a quick tour inside to see what was going on inside the house. Many a memory rushed to mind. There were girls everywhere watching TV and hanging out on one of many sofas, obvious other alum returning for the big game and a multitude of brothers, sorority girls, and other well-wishers there to soak in the atmosphere. After a few quick photos of the gang inside, we ventured to the front lawn for one last photo of the scene from the lawn.

All is well, the traditions of college students are in safe keeping, even after over two decades since my season, Sigma Chi’s are still the best at putting on an event that is both welcoming and entertaining to all that attend.
