POSTED 10/02/2008 - Senior, Trey Winkler #7 is a first year organized high school football starter for the Tornadoes. A four year letterman in baseball; he knew he could throw the football and over the summer he decided to add one more letter to his already crowded letterman’s jacket. At 6 foot even and 185 pounds, his 4.65 speed in the 40 yard dash may not be the fastest on the team, but for a good sized lumbering QB, it’s not bad.

This past weekend against Fernandina Beach High School, Trey was able to show off some of his talents. Trey went 6 for 11 for 113 yards passing, threw for one touchdown and one interception. Winkler had 90 yards rushing with 60 of those yards accounting for his own rushing touchdown. I asked if he had to put some moves on his opponent to score that long run, Winkler smiled and said: "I got lucky and bounced it outside, and no, I didn’t have to shake it up or try to put any moves on anybody."

As for his likes about the game, he reads like the all American kid from next door. Winkler loves the camaraderie and brotherhood that develops on a team when everyone is working hard for a common goal. The game gives great insight into work ethic on and off the field too. When I asked about his favorite trash talk, he had none - his belief is to let his actions speak for themselves. I like this guy!

Winkler credits his Uncle Michael who played baseball for UNF as someone who has always encouraged him to do his best at whatever sport or activity he tries. Trey’s favorite college team is the University of Florida and favorite players are Danny Wuerffel

and Tim Tebow. A little side note to remember about this guy, Winkler and Tebow share the same birth date - August 14th - for what it’s worth.

In the classroom Winkler is as effective as he is on the gridiron. While maintaining a weighted 4.1 GPA, he says Anatomy is his favorite class. I asked if being a physician was in the future? He said he could possibly see himself pursuing that field and pursuing the subject at the University of Florida, so he could share the legacy with his father, a Florida grad as well.

Winkler’s favorite dinner time dish is fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and to drink, sweetened tea. Not much for the sweets he says, but if chocolate cake, or apple pie with ice cream is in the house, that will do just fine.

Trey Winkler. Here is a guy to keep your eyes on.
