Jags beat Texans in overtime

You could have sworn you had been there before Sunday when for the second week in a row, the Jaguars managed to pull off a win after the Houston Texans scored late in the game. This

 
time, it took a sudden-death, overtime period for the Jaguars to pull off a 30-27 victory.

The Jaguars have erased their 0-2 start and are at 2-2, alone in second place in the AFC South and two games behind the Tennessee Titans.

All the credit goes to the offense. During the four games this season, the Jags have scored more points than in any previous season’s first four games under Coach Jack Del Rio.

"It turned into an offensive battle. It’s huge for David Garrard to lead us for the second week in a row," said Del Rio.

OFFENSE PRODUCES 79 POINTS IN FIRST FOUR GAMES

The Jaguars have scored 79 points in the first four games, the most in the first four games since Jack Del Rio took the helm in 2003.

JAGUARS IN OVERTIME GAME FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2006

The Jaguars improved to 6-3 in overtime games in franchise history. Today’s game was the first overtime game since October 1, 2006 at Washington (L, 30-36) and first home overtime game since November 14, 2004 vs. Detroit (W, 23-17).

GARRARD IMPROVES TO 21-13 AS STARTER; 3-1 AGAINST HOUSTON

David Garrard improved to 21-13 as a starter, 13-7 at home, 7-9 in AFC South play and 3-1 against Houston. Garrard has more wins (3) against Houston than any other team as a starter and he is 5-1 in his last six starts at home. He hooked up with Matt Jones for a 16-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the second half and he has at least one TD pass in eight of the last 10 games.

GARRARD REGISTERS 16TH CAREER 100-PLUS RATING GAME; 14TH AS A STARTER

David Garrard recorded his first 100-plus passer rating of the season and 16TH of his career. Garrard finished 23 of 32 for 236 yards with one touchdown for a 103.1 rating. In addition, Garrard completed 71.9 percent of his passes, his fourth straight start with a completion percentage of 60 percent or higher and his second consecutive game with a 70-plus completion percentage.

MATT JONES CONTINUES TO SHINE; FIVE-PLUS RECEPTIONS IN FIRST FOUR GAMES

Matt Jones finished with five receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown. Jones has 14 career touchdowns, tied for the fourth-most in franchise history. Jones became the first Jaguars receiver since Jimmy Smith in 2001 to have five-plus receptions in the first four games and has five-plus receptions in five straight regular season games dating back to 2007. He leads the team in receiving in 2008 with 21 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown.

SCOBEE PERFECT ON THREE FIELD GOAL ATTEMPTS; STREAK AT 10 STRAIGHT

Josh Scobee was three for three on field goals today as he hit from 46, 40 and 37 yards. Scobee hit a game-winning field goal for the second consecutive week. Scobee has made 10 consecutive field goals after misfiring from 37 yards at Tennessee in the season-opener. He is 16 for 16 with 69 points in the last seven home games. He leads the team in 2008 with 37 points.

SCOBEE RACKS UP THE POINTS

Josh Scobee finished with 12 points today and increased his career total to 418 points. The 418 points are tied with Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor for second place in team history.

OWENS SCORES FIRST CAREER TOUCHDOWN ON FIRST CAREER RUSH

Third-year pro Montell Owens scored his first career touchdown on his first career rush as he took the snap from center in the first quarter on fourth down and raced 41 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest run of the season for the Jaguars and the longest touchdown run by a Jaguar other than Maurice Jones-Drew or Fred Taylor since David Garrard had a 41-yard touchdown run on October 13, 2002 at Tennessee. Owens earned a roster spot as an undrafted free agent from Maine in 2006 and has played in 34 games. He recorded his first career reception last week at Indianapolis in the fourth quarter.

JERRY PORTER SEES FIRST ACTION AS A JAGUAR

Jerry Porter saw his first action as a Jaguar today and finished with one reception for six yards. Porter missed the first three games with a hamstring injury. He was signed as an unrestricted free agent from Oakland. He has played in 105 games with 64 starts over nine seasons.

HARVEY EARNS FIRST CAREER START

2008 first round pick Derrick Harvey started at defensive end, his first career start. Harvey was the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft and saw extensive action in a reserve role in the first three games.

The following players were inactive for the Jaguars: OL Charles Spencer, C Brad Meester, WR Troy Williamson, OL Chris Naeole, LB Justin Durant, WR Dennis Northcutt, DT Tony McDaniel and S Reggie Nelson.
