Men’s golf opens 2008-09 season

With a month of practice under their belts, the JU men’s golf team opens its 2008-09 campaign on Monday at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate.

The Dolphins will open the event with 36 holes on Monday, with the final 18 set for Tuesday.

"We’re excited to get out there and compete against some other teams," said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. "This group has worked hard in the past month to get ready for this week."

JU will send a pair of seniors, a junior, a sophomore and a freshman out in the first tournament. Christian Martin and Josh Kinsey represent the seniors and have the most experience of the group, with Martin being the lone member left from the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference championship team.

Justin Jones is the junior in the group and has earned the No. 1 spot in the lineup by his stellar play in the qualifying leading up to the event, carding several rounds under par.

The underclassmen are Stephen Healy and newcomer Bobby Fredeking. Healy started for JU a year ago and has developed in a brilliant ball striker over the summer while Fredeking has been impressive throughout the fall practices.

"These guys have all played well at various points during qualifying," Blackburn said. "If they play to their potential, we can be a very competitive team."

The Dolphins face a field that includes top 50 ranked Georgia Southern, A-Sun rival Kennesaw State as well as Western Carolina, Troy and Winthrop.

"This is a good field for us to start our season and see where we are," Blackburn said. "The golf course is setup to be a tough test and our guys are ready to go."
