Gloria Goodell

October 6, 2008 - Mrs. Gloria Goodell died in her home on Saturday, October 4, 2008, after an eight year struggle with cancer.

Gloria Eugenia Duque Goodell was born on May 8, 1936 in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador in Central America. Three of her grandparents had been born in Spain. She attended

Sacred Heart School in San Salvador. She moved to San Francisco in 1956 where she attended City College and was employed by Bank of America, Koret of California and later by Pan American World Airways based in Miami. She married William Goodell in Coral Gables, Florida in 1960. They lived in Bloomfield, Michigan during her husband's long career with Ford Motor Company. After vacationing and spending summers on Amelia Island for several years, they moved permanently in 1988.

She was a member of the Plantation Ladies Association and Golf and Tennis Association. She traveled extensively overseas with her husband greatly enjoying full-family Thanksgiving vacations in Akumal, Mexico. Keeping contacts with friends in Michigan and Central America, touring and snorkeling brought her great enjoyment. Her greatest interest, however, was in providing comfort items for neighbors in time of need.

Her two sons, William and Robert married what she called "perfect" daughters-in-law. William and Melanie Goodell line in Lincolnshire, Illinois with granddaughters Laura and Amy. Robert and Sarah Goodell live in Arlington, Virginia with granddaughters Megan and Andrea and year old Alex. All of her granddaughters have found "golden shells left on the beach by the mermaid." Her informally adopted daughter, Anne Martens lives in Wilmington, Delaware. Her sister, Mrs. William Callaway and brother, Adolfo Duque live in California.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 13, 2008 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Fernandina Beach with Father Gerard O'Shea, officiating.
