Lead foot, light wallet

Lead foot, light wallet

POSTED 10/07/2008

Like to speed, then you better like to pay... and pay big.

Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 mph will carry a fine of $1,000 on the first offense under the new law that took effect this month. That fine will elevate to $2,500 with a one-year revocation of the driver's license on the second offense and $5,000 with a 10-year revocation of the driver's license on the third offense.

Previously, the fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 mph was $250. All speeding fines are doubled in school or construction zones.

Motorcyclists will face the same penalties if caught speeding and in addition there are new laws aimed at stopping riders from doing "wheelies," which occur when the front wheel of a motorcycle leaves the ground, and from improperly attaching or displaying license plates.

The fine for doing a wheelie is a little more than $100. If the plate is mounted improperly, officers can fine the rider $1,000.
