BRYCEVILLE, FL - Old photographs, maps, and text covering the history of Bryceville, Brandy Branch and other nearby towns will be on display during the entire month of October at the Bryceville Library. The collection, put together by the West Nassau Historical Society and the West Nassau Genealogical Society, is part of a month long celebration of the diverse history of the southwestern section of Nassau County.
Part of the exhibit tells of Brandy Branch and the families such as the Lanes and Stokes and others who settled this pine covered area near the St. Marys River. A photo of George Bryce, a civil war veteran who moved to the area after the war, is the center piece of the story of the man whom Bryceville is named for in 1886.
Info about other area communities and families such as Crawford, Sunowa Spring, and Verdie are also displayed.
As part of the history month exhibit, the Historical Society is also planning a history driving tour of the area on Saturday, October 18, at 9 AM, starting at the Bryceville Community Center next to the Library. There will be an hour long tour orientation complete with photos, exhibits, and informal discussions of the area's history inside the center. Afterwards the tour caravan will lead visitors driving their own vehicles to several historical sites, including the century old Bryce House and Methodist Church.
Both the library display and history driving tour are open to the public and free of charge, although donations will be graciously accepted by the Historical Society.
For library hours, please call the Bryceville Library at 904-266-9813.
